You might be wondering, "what are these guys doing with the money I give them?". When we look at our checkbooks, we wonder that same thing sometimes. :) Hee Hee! All jokes aside, it is important to know how we manage the money paid for the services here.
What is the concept?
The concept of MonkeyBlade.net is to provide a great service at a good price. So, we've tried to find a reasonable price that will hopefully still get the bills paid. We are NOT a for profit service. This isn't a commercial operation, in fact, our limited clientele (friends and family) helps to ensure the quality of service by not growing too big for our equipment.
What bills are there to pay?
The monthly cost of simply have this server plugged into the internet isn't cheap. The server itself was donated by the Chief Administrator with no guaranteed compensation. The administrators donate their time to maintain the security and stability of the server environment, troubleshooting user problems, and sometimes even helping out with a bit of webcode; again this is uncompensated. We expect we'll need more bandwidth in the future (costs more), and should upgrades be needed to the server, they will have to be paid for as well. Oh yes, there is the small fee for domain name registration, as well.
So, how do you use the money?
So, this is how we apply your service fees. All monies paid in are combined and applied to the monthly recurring costs. If the monies are sufficiently large such that if the administrators do not contribute but the costs will still be met, the administrators will not contribute. This is the sole compensation allocated to administrators, "free" hosting. This is justified by time spent working to ensure the server's security and stability. Any monies still available will be held in the account, drawing interest, until such a time that it is needed to pay for increased costs and/or system upgrades.
